Empowering kids through science

Welcome to WonderWorks! We bring fun and simple experiments into the local elementary schools. The photo to the left features oobleck, a substance that can be used to teach students the effects of non-newtonian fluids. You can make your own using cornstarch and water! Through fun and experiments like this, we strive to pique student interest in the sciences at an early age. Our Vision

Wonderworks is a program stemming from one member’s experience with a like minded project in high school. Wonderworks is not here to teach; that is already covered by teachers, and by many other organizations on the UC Berkeley campus. Using science as our tool of choice, our goal is to pique the interest of young students. This interest can be in the specific demonstration presented in the field of science, or in the whole idea of education.

What We Do

Groups of 3-5 students volunteering their time in WonderWorks design or choose from module presentations from our database. They then adopt an elementary school class for a semester and perform interactive demonstrations during prearranged visits. These presentations usually occur about Three times a semester depending on outstanding factors, including the desires of the teacher of the class involved. Visits last about 2 hours; 1 hour for interactive demonstration and 1 hour of travel, preparation and clean-up.

Who Can Join

Our membership is clearly not limited to students pursuing degrees in scientific fields. We welcome anyone to Wonderworks who shares our enthusiasm for learning and interest in having fun with younger kids. The reason we chose to use science as our facilitative device is that science is a field that is very often lacking in elementary school programs. It is also a field that is continually changing our views of the world around us and will surely continue to be a key factor in out lives forever. Besides, science is awesome, and we are sure that many children would agree.
